Not all therapists are trained to effectively diagnose and treat body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). We are trained in exposure and response prevention (ERP), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and inference-based therapy (IBT or I-CBT).
BDD is characterized by preoccupation with one or more perceived physical flaws. The keyword is perceived – you see it when no one else does or it would appear very slight to others. Common perceived flaws are skin, teeth, scars, moles, facial features, or shape of a particular body part. Concerns related to overall weight and shape are typically accounted for by an eating disorder, not body dysmorphic disorder.
Individuals have fear or distress related to their perceived flaw(s) and how others will respond to their perceived flaw(s). They engage in repetitive behaviors related to the perceived flaw(s) and will often avoid or endure distress in situations that trigger thoughts related to their flaw – particularly social situations.
