Evidence based treatment for social anxiety includes the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Other professionals who don't specialize in treating social anxiety often try to give short term fixes to help you "calm down." Our goal is to treat the underlying mechanisms contributing to social anxiety.
Social anxiety is characterized by the fear of social and/or performance situations. Individuals will avoid social and/or performance situations or endure them with distress. While in social situations, individuals may do certain behaviors to make the situation feel safer. Common behaviors are: having a "safety buddy," not making eye contact, and use of medication, drugs, or alcohol.
